Hail, heat and a lot of valleys

A roof in San Antonio has two jobs that pull in opposite directions. Through spring it has to shrug off hail and straight-line wind from storms that build over the Hill Country and roll across Bexar County in an afternoon. Through a long summer it sits under sun that pushes attic temperatures far past the air outside, drying sealant around skylights, vents and chimneys until the next downpour finds the gap.

The houses add their own complications. North-side homes in The Dominion, Stone Oak and Timberwood Park tend to be big limestone and stucco builds with steep, cut-up roofs, tile or architectural shingle, and an HOA that wants to approve the colour. Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills have older homes with additions, low-slope porches and chimneys that have been patched more than once. The northeast suburbs are mostly shingle roofs of a similar age, so when one street gets hail, every house on it usually needs a look.

We start with the roof itself, not a sales sheet: a walk of the surface, the attic where we can reach it, and dated photos of what we find. Then you get repair and replacement options in writing, so you can decide, or hand the photos to your insurer.

Why Rico’s Roofing

What you get when you call Rico’s

Hail know-how

We know what hail bruising looks like on shingles, tile and metal, and photograph it the way adjusters need to see it.

Photos, not guesses

Each inspection ends with dated pictures of the problem and a written note of what we recommend.

Tile done carefully

Clay and concrete tile is lifted, stacked and reset, so a repair does not leave more broken tile behind.

Openings sealed right

Skylights, chimneys, vents and pipe boots are where heat-dried roofs leak, so we rebuild them properly.

HOA-ready proposals

Material, colour and product sheets are listed so architectural committees can sign off quickly.

Booked before storm season

Spring is busy. Inspect in winter and the small repairs are done before hail season starts.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if hail damaged my roof?

From the ground you usually can't. Look for dents on metal vents, gutters and patio covers, and for granules collecting at downspouts. On the roof itself, hail leaves soft bruises and dark spots where granules were knocked off. A close inspection with photos is the reliable way to know.

Should I call my insurer or a roofer first?

Many homeowners have the roof inspected first so they know whether there is damage worth claiming. If there is, the dated photos from the inspection give the adjuster something concrete to compare against when they visit.

Why does my skylight only leak in heavy rain?

Usually the flashing or sealant around the frame has dried out and only lets water past when rain is driven sideways or pools above the curb. Resealing helps for a while, but a proper reflash or a new unit with its own flashing kit lasts much longer.

How long does a shingle roof last in San Antonio?

Heat and hail shorten shingle life compared with milder places, especially on south and west slopes and over poorly vented attics. Curling, bald spots and heavy granule loss are signs a roof is near the end, whatever its age.
